Coffs Harbour Regional Landcare (CHRL) is thrilled to share the progress of the Korora Bird Nest Boxes Project. With the support of dedicated volunteers from Korora Landcare and the expertise of Eco Australis arborists, we have successfully assembled, painted, and installed twelve bird nest boxes across two Landcare sites in Korora. The loss of large Eucalypts due to clearing has led to a decrease in tree hollows, making them a dwindling resource in the local environment. This project addresses the need to enhance the degraded local bird habitats by providing much needed nesting sites for species that rely on tree hollows.
The installation process involved careful planning, including site inspections. Each nest box was tagged with a unique identifier corresponding to its designated site and species. Following the installation, the first bird survey was conducted on Saturday, July 6th, 2024, at both the Opal Cove and Finlays Road. Two twitching experts from the Coffs Birdwatch group assisted with surveying on the day. The Site Coordinator organised the groups for each site—two or three observers and one recorder.
Future monitoring will be conducted using selfie camera traps to track the use and effectiveness of the nest boxes, along with seasonal on-ground bird surveys to get a reflective representation of both migratory and non-migratory species. This initiative not only supports local bird populations but also engages the community. We look forward to sharing the results of the ongoing monitoring conducted by our volunteer of our nest boxes and bird surveys in the coming years.
